WORKING WITH WRITERS
I love working as a writing coach, and pushing writers to discover their best writing. As a coach and editor, I am thoughtful, thorough, and believe in honoring the writer’s intention in the kind of feedback I give, rather than steering them to a prescriptive way of writing. I focus, in particular, on developmental editing, including creating a unified manuscript through structure and chapter arrangement.
My edits and feedback are thus centered on the intention of the artist herself, with a heavy dose of challenging the writer to push past vulnerabilities, point of view, and blocks to get their best writing. I work well with clients who have long projects, and have completed a large part of a manuscript or a complete manuscript, and are ready to push it to a final, publishable version.
Rates can vary based on your focus, whether you want writing coaching as a developing writer or have a full manuscript that you are willing stretch and shape, adding rigor and a heightened sense of creativity to your writing process.
Generally, rates start from $65-$85/hour, with the amount of hours dependent upon the intensity of the editing preferred (overall, short feedback or developmental, full editing feedback). Discounts are given for long-term agreements. For an estimate, contact me using the form below.
I am a multi-genre writer, with two books of poetry and numerous publications in poetry, fiction and nonfiction. A graduate of Warren Wilson College, where I received an MFA in the The Program for Writers, I have as an editor and professional writer collectively for more than 15 years, including as a reader and literary assistant with the New York literary agency, Harold Ober and Associates. Recently, I’ve taught undergraduate writing classes at the University of Houston and the University of Houston - Downtown, and have taught multi-genre classes through local writing organizations in Houston. I highly recommend working with Leslie Contreras Schwartz if you are looking to be inspired and challenged to do your best writing work. Her constructive and insightful feedback helped me to address major issues in language & style, structure and character development. She encouraged me to write bravely by delving more fully into my protagonist’s struggle with details and description which has resulted in a much more compelling novel. Leslie Contreras Schwartz is a brilliant and talented editor. I am so glad that I asked her to edit my full manuscript.
